The technology uses machine learning to improve the resolution of low-quality video by eliminating blocky compression artifacts and enhancing text clarity. The feature is still in testing and is currently only available to half of the users running the Canary channel of Edge in Microsoft’s Insider program. VSR will only work on video resolutions of 720p or lower and the video cannot be protected with digital rights management (DRM) technology. This could limit the content that can be upscaled as popular streaming platforms such as Netflix and HBO Max use DRM tech for copyright protection.
